A lemon and ginger tea brand sold at Aldi has been recalled due to contamination with a chemical which may cause injury or illness.

A product recall was issued on Friday for ‘Diplomat Lemon and Ginger Herbal Infusion 60g (40 bags)’ due to them being contaminated with ethylene oxide.

The recalled boxes have ‘best before’ dates from 08/02/23 to 11/02/23.

They were sold at Aldi stores between February 8 and February 22, in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and the ACT.

The ACCC said people “should not consume this product and should return the product to any ALDI store for a full refund”.

“Food products containing chemical contamination may cause illness or injury if consumed,” the product recall said.

Ethylene oxide is a chemical used to make antifreeze, pesticides, and sterilisation agents, according to the United States’ National Cancer Institute.

It is also believed to cause cancer, the website says.

“The ability of ethylene oxide to damage DNA makes it an effective sterilising agent but also accounts for its cancer-causing activity.”

According to NSW Health, breathing in high levels of ethylene oxide can cause “irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory passages and affect the nervous system — for example headaches, nausea, vomiting, memory loss, and numbness.

An Aldi spokesperson said in its product recall notice it was “working with the supplier to identify the cause of this issue”.

“Aldi investigated this product and identified the potential issue and as a precaution has initiated this recall.

“Aldi has not received any complaints from customers with any related illnesses.

“We apologise for any inconvenience, but the quality and safety of our products for our customers is our top priority.”
