Alexandra Cooper is best known for Call Her Daddy, a bawdy podcast about sex and dating in New York. Despite the podcast’s popularity, people don’t know much about the history of the woman behind the podcast, and people might be wondering just how Alexandra Copper became famous.

Alexandra Cooper was not always famous for her podcast. Her original claim to fame was as a Division I athlete at Boston University, where she received a soccer scholarship. Despite her skills on the field, Cooper quit the team in her junior year to focus on her studies.

Read more below about Alexandra Cooper’s life, what she got her degree in, and how she wound up hosting one of the most popular podcasts on the air.

Newtown to New York

Though Call Her Daddy might lead listeners to believe that Alexandra Cooper is a born and bred New Yorker, the podcast host was actually native to the small town of Newtown, Pennsylvania. Born August 21, 1994, Cooper was raised along with her two siblings by her parents, Bryan and Laurie.

In high school, Cooper honed her skills on the soccer field, deciding in her sophomore year that she wanted to attend Boston University. Though several Ivy League schools were interested in Cooper, she felt their athletics programs were not up to par, saying, “I love soccer and the level of soccer at Ivy League colleges is not comparable to D-One. I wasn’t ready to risk losing my level of play.”

While attending Boston University, Cooper majored in film and television. Despite her skills on the soccer field, her love of media studies won out, and Cooper quit the team to focus on her major.

Soccer Star to Podcast Presenter

After graduation, Cooper landed a job at Dirty Water Media. She worked as an on-air host for the company, which describes itself as “Greater Boston’s most in-depth source for what’s happening, trending, and being talked about in the New England nightlife, dining, music, fashion, entertainment, and sports scene.”

Eventually Cooper moved from Boston to New York City, where she briefly worked at a magazine before joining Barstool Sports. Barstool Sports is a pop culture blog that covers viral news and trending topics.

During this time she was introduced to Sofiya Franklin, who would eventually become her co-host on Call Her Daddy. The duo became good friends and came up with the idea for their podcast while on vacation together.

The show debuted in 2018 and was an instant hit with its audience. It went from having 12,000 downloads to 2 million in a matter of months, as well as topping Apple’s podcast charts. In a blog post about the show, Cooper described why Barstool Sports thought the show would be a hit, writing, “Barstool liked our idea of uncensored, real, female locker room talk, which quite frankly is just as nasty as guy locker room talk. And we had no problem exploiting our experiences — as well as ourselves — for our listeners’ entertainment.”

Not only did the two become podcast stars, but also social media influencers. Cooper boasts over 1 million followers on Instagram, where she often posts racy pictures of herself. Not only that, but the duo became celebrities in their own right, with Cooper dating Noah Syndergaard, the pitcher for the New York Mets.

A Falling Out and a Media Frenzy

Despite the podcast’s success, in May 2020, drama erupted between Cooper and Franklin, with both girls briefly disappearing from the airwaves and Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports calling both women, “unprofessional, disloyal and greedy.” Apparently contract negotiations fell apart behind the scenes and legal teams got involved.

The future of the show remained unclear, with none of the parties involved having reached an agreement in the weeks that followed. Though Franklin never commented on her departure, Cooper took to YouTube to announce that she had signed a new deal with the podcast’s parent company and would be going solo as a host.

Though Cooper’s career has already had its ups and downs, it remains to be seen if she will remain with Call Her Daddy after her new contract is up, or if she will move on to bigger and better things.
