Eddie Howe has confirmed his backroom staff ahead of his first Premier League game in charge of Newcastle.

As was first revealed by The Athletic yesterday, the club have announced the departure of Steve Bruce’s assistants Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew.

However, Graeme Jones (assistant), Ben Dawson (first-team development) and Simon Smith (goalkeeper coach) all remain from the previous regime.

Jason Tindall (assistant), Stephen Purches (first-team coach), Simon Weatherstone (first-team coach), and Dan Hodges (sport science) have all joined the club.

They face Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

A Newcastle statement read: “Newcastle United has confirmed a number of changes to its first team coaching staff following the appointment of Eddie Howe as the club's new head coach.

“Eddie has already been joined at the Newcastle United Training Centre by assistant head coach Jason Tindall, who was previously his assistant at AFC Bournemouth before taking on the managerial position.

“First team coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, who left the Vitality Stadium in June 2021 following several years of service, have also signed contracts on Tyneside.

“Assistant head coach Graeme Jones, first team development coach Ben Dawson and goalkeeper coach Simon Smith all form part of Eddie's new coaching set-up.

“The club has also added to its sports science department, with Dan Hodges arriving from AFC Bournemouth.

“Meanwhile, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, who arrived as assistants to Steve Bruce in July 2019, have left their roles after supporting Graeme Jones during an interim period.

“The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Steve and Stephen and wishes them well for the future.”

The (lengthy) to-do list awaiting Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Why has Howe kept Jones?

Jones was assured of his position ahead of Howe’s appointment, but the ex-Bournemouth head coach is excited about the former England assistant’s presence.

“I'm delighted to work with Graeme,” Howe said at his unveiling.

“I think adding someone to my backroom team was something that I'd looked at and considered during my break and it's something that I positively wanted to do. So having Graeme already here in situ, as someone I know, respect and really like, I think it's going to be a perfect match for us.”

What is in Howe’s in-tray?

Howe has taken over with his new team 19th, five points shy of safety. They have not won any of their 11 league matches this season; the only Premier League side still in that position. The last teams to have done this — Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers, Watford and Sheffield United — have all been relegated.

To put it mildly, Howe has his work cut out. Go Deeper below to read his partial to-do list.
